developer: Demigiant publisher: Open Lab Games Official website
In addition to simulating the life of a football club manager, Football Drama offers RPG elements. The game was developed by Open Lab Games and Demigiant, whose founder, Lani Giardini, is the game's creator and chief illustrator.
Plot
We play as Rocco Galliano, the manager of the Calchester Assembled Football Club. He was appointed to this position for the second time – seven years before, he was fired from the position due to bad press and fan pressure. It seemed that he would never return to the world of football, but when his successor made the team's situation even worse, the club's owner, billionaire Boris Aluminovitch, decided to give him a second chance. Our task is to save the club, and we will fight not only against opposing teams, but also corruption, doping, and scandals. The plot offers many choices and decisions that affect the game. The chances of success are slim, but it should be remembered that the real victory is being able to overcome the difficult past of our manager.
Mechanics
The gameplay in Football Drama is divided into several elements. The first of these are the dialogues with other characters: footballers, chairmen, journalists and other dignitaries associated with the world of football. We play them out on special boards where we see the exact course of the conversation visualized as speech bubbles. During these conversations, we make most of the choices that affect the level of our karma or chaos. Both of these indicators define our image in the eyes of other characters and open new tactical options during matches, visualized in the form of cards.
When the next match draws near, we start planning our team's trainings. We have several templates to choose from, with each affecting the players' performance in a different aspect of the game. Depending on our decisions, they can play better defensively, exchange passes more quickly, or play the ball more effectively with their heads. We can also give up training in favor of a night out in the bar, which, of course, will affect the form of the players. Once preparations are done, we choose five tactics that we can use during the game.
In the match, our team is red, the opponent is blue. The players' actions are observed and can be modified in a turn-based system. After each decision made by us or our opponent, the balance on the field changes, depicted by the coloring of the pitch. As the match progresses, we mostly decide how much risk our team should take. In addition, we can use the tactics chosen before the match, more efficient against some opponents, less on others. We will not immediately see the consequences of our actions: the game will inform us about the success or failure only after some time. Before making a decision, we should pay attention to the tension indicator of our team, which determines the accuracy with which the players execute our commands. Games are covered by two commentators, whose comments can be uses to better plan the actions of our players.
It's worth taking care of a good relationship with the management. If we make decisions incompatible with his instructions for a long period time, we can be fired, prematurely ending the game – which does not mean losing.
Technical aspecst:
Through the use of stylized, cartoonish 2D graphics, the game stands out visually. The PC version also received more illustrations and mechanics compared to the mobile release.
