Floppy Knights is a humorous game combining elements of strategy and tactical games, enriched with elements borrowed from card games. The project was developed by independent Rose City Games studio, whose portfolio includes a game The World Next Door. The idea of it, as well as the concepts of other works of this group, was born during one of the game jams.
Plot
Floppy Knights takes us on a journey into a fantasy world. The main character of the game is Phoebe, who is trying to earn enough money to move away from her parents. As a talented inventor and programmer, the girl constructed Carlton, a bionic arm capable of turning worn-out floppy disks into title knights. This skill proves extremely useful when all kinds of monsters appear in the land, which our hero have to face.
Mechanics
In Floppy Knights, the action is shown from a bird's eye view. The pillar of the game are the tasks performed by Phoebe for the inhabitants of the land, which boil down to fighting battles with various monsters. The clashes take place in turn-based mode, in arenas covered by a grid of square fields. The main character does not directly participate in the battle, but uses the units she gains as she progresses in the game.
At first glance, her helpers are not very different from enemies; enough to say that among the "knights", goblins and other fantastic creatures are leading the way. However, each of them has unique abilities; using them properly is the key to success, as the number of units summoned to the battlefield is limited by the amount of available energy. But it doesn't stop there, because in each round we also play cards collected during the adventure; among them we will find those that allow us to move the warriors around the arena, as well as those that will strengthen a particular attack, cure one of our subordinates or weaken a particular enemy. Success also depends on the composition of such a card deck, which will work well in any situation.
Technical aspects
The strong point of Floppy Knights is the hand-drawn graphics, behind which stands Marlowe Dobbe, the author of the visual design of Dicey Dungeons. The game is played to the accompaniment of chiptune music.
