Fetch is an adventure game with prominent arcade features and simple puzzles. The game was published by Big Fish Games, and developed by Big Fish Studios, which is the publisher’s subdivision. The team behind this game is known for titles such as Drawn: The Painted Tower and Mystery Case Files series.

Plot

In terms of the plot, Fetch is reminiscent of Heart of Darkness, a game by a well known developer, Éric Chahi. We play as a small boy, who owns a dog called Bear. They live in a city ruled by powerful Embark Corporation. One time, its agents kidnap the dog, and the boy sets out for a dangerous journey to take it back and discover the motivation behind Embark’s actions. To achieve this, he must visit various locations, including sunny islands where the corporation built its pirate theme park, or slimy sewers patrolled by hostile creatures.

Mechanics

Fetch for PC is an adventure game, but unlike most titles from the genre, it also features many arcade sequences which require fast reactions. We observe the world from the side most of the time, leading our character through locations, collecting useful items and collectables and solving puzzles.

However, the game will change into an arcade minigame from time to time. For example: to collect a required amount of coins, we must go through a sequence with a slingshot that shoots bomb and fight pirate ships and submarines. Other time we feed rainbow snake with flying fishes, clearing its food from bombs and mischievous ghosts, while paying attention to what fishes he eats.

Technical aspects

Fetch offers gentle, colorful visuals, which make it look like Pixar’s movies. The sound is also solid, with atmospheric music and announcements of Embark’s computer system, which are often related to the current location or task.

Developers also implemented a few interesting functions we access from the main menu. Those include e.g. concept art album and detailed strategy guide that describes how to complete each stage of the game.
