Fable: The Journey for X360 is part of the popular Fable series. However, this spin-off was created for Kinect users and cannot be played without it. The game was developed by Lionhead Studios, the creators of the previous installments. In contrast to those, Fable: The Journey is a first person perspective game, and it does not feature as much freedom of choice. Instead, the game focuses on linear play-style.

Story

In Fable: The Journey for X360, the player assumes the role of Gabriel, a young coachman traversing the land of Albion with his people. The careless Gabriel wanders off the beaten path and has to take a detour. Soon, he encounters a mysterious prophetess Teresa. The meeting initiates the protagonist's journey, during which, Gabriel will face the evil forces threatening the entire Albion, and he will become a hero. Defeating the enemy may require greatest sacrifices.

Gameplay

In Fable: The Journey for X360, the gameplay consists of three basic elements. For the most part, the player drives the carriage by different paths in Albion. Travelling is often interrupted by different threats, such as gangs of Hobbes or dangerous cliffs. Secondly, the player can look around or heal the horse during stopovers at safe camps. The most spectacular part comes third, and these are the combat sequences taking place at a variety of locations, such as crypts or dungeons for example.

The game is controlled entirely by performing adequate movements and gestures - the developers took advantage of Kinect's potential to the fullest. When the protagonist is driving the carriage, the player has to imitate holding the reins and pulling them appropriately in order to make a turn, slow down or to accelerate. Spells are controlled with the player's hands as well. To cast a fireball for example, the player has to raise their hand and shake it towards an enemy. Such instances deliver a great deal of satisfaction, but controlling the game through a motion sensing device brings limitations as well. Thus The Journey is a linear experience and rarely does the player have the opportunity to make a choice.

Technical aspects

The game utilizes Unreal Engine 3, which makes the visuals look very satisfying. Limiting this gaming experience to one, pre-defined path of progress made it possible to create beautiful landscapes, locations and special effects.
