Action, science fiction, platformers, indie games, 2.5D, side-scroll, singleplayer
Platform action game in which we find ourselves inside a computer transforming in front of our eyes: the machine has been infected by a virus and our goal is to eliminate enemy programs. In Exception, the action is shown from the side, and the game world evokes associations with the film series Trons.
Exception is a platform action game developed by the independent developer Will Traxler, operating under the brand of Traxmaster Sofware. The main source of inspiration for the dev were the Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania series.
Plot
The action of Exception takes place inside a computer, whose appearance evokes associations with the Tron movie series. The machine was infected by an authoritarian virus. The resistance is fighting it, as is the player.
Mechanics
In Exception we observe the action from the side. The campaign is divided into 128 levels located in sixteen different worlds. The game is distinguished by the fact that the stages are transformed in front of us and the camera changes position freely so that what is currently a ceiling can become a floor or a wall after a while.
When we cross the maps, we not only jump on platforms and avoid numerous traps but also face hordes of opponents. In our path there are both common hostile programs and fifteen powerful bosses, who are presented as giant monsters. We eliminate enemies in close combat, and the key to success is to perform evasions, rapid counter-attacks, and chain attacks in spectacular combinations. The set of standard moves is complemented by six special attacks, which we unlock and improve with the use of artifacts gained along the way.
Game modes
Exception can be played solo, but online rankings are a substitute for multiplayer mode, where we can boast of our achievements.
Technical aspects
Visuals of Exception bring to mind the aforementioned Tron - the shimmering colorful interior of the computer is highlighted by omnipresent neon signs. The game is accompanied by a catchy synth-wave soundtrack with songs by Kalax and Waveshaper.
