EVEREST VR
A simulation game designed for virtual reality sets, taking us to Himalayas where we conquer the summit of the highest mountain in the world.
developer: Solfar Studios publisher: Solfar Studios Official website
EVEREST VR is a simulation game, which uses virtual reality goggles to offer players emotional journey to the summit of the highest mountain of the world, without even leaving their homes. The game is available on PS4. EVEREST VR is a result of co-operation between Icelandic Solfar Studios and RVX team, who worked on special effects for Baltasar Kormaruk’s movie, Everest. Institutions, such as Chinese Shanda Group, Finnish NSA Ventures and VC Inventure, supported the project financially. EVEREST VR is the first game in the series, created to allow the players, (but not just them), to see many places on Earth, not accessible for most people.
Mechanics
EVEREST VR is a kind of a virtual journey to the summit of the world's highest mountain – Mount Everest, (or Chomolungma, as Tibetans call it), which is 8848 meters high. We can experience the beauty of the journey while traveling through five iconic scenes: preparing our expedition at the basecamp, traversing the dangerous Khumbu Icefalls, spending overnight in a transition camp, ascending nearly vertical Hilary Step to finally reach the summit of Everest.
EVEREST VR is primarily a simulation game. Sólfar Studios aimed to create a product addressed to a large group of recipients that have no experience in mountain climbing whatsoever, instead of creating a simulator designed just for professional alpinists. Producers take a great care to reach a proper balance between pure simulation and enjoyable game. Thanks to that, anyone who has access to a virtual reality set can see for themselves, what is it like to take part in a Himalayan expedition.
Technical aspects
Released on PS4, EVEREST VR is powered by the Unreal Engine 4. It doesn't just give players high quality visuals, but it also uses dual imaging photogrammetry, which enabled scenery reconstruction in 3-D. Experience RVX gained while working on Everest proved to be helpful and high-resolution photos prepared for the movie were used to create 3-D scenes in the game. Final result is reinforced by virtual reality sets, like HTC Vive or PlayStationVR, required to start our game.
