Released for PC, Europa Universalis IV: Third Rome is a DLC pack for the fourth installment in the history-based strategy game series, which allows you to take control of one of the playable nations and lead it to domination over the passing ages. This expansion is the first of the so-called Immersion Packs, which focus on expanding specific options in individual regions of the world. In this case we are dealing with Russia, the eponymous Third Rome, a spiritual successor to Byzantine Empire.

Mechanics

Along with the Europa Universalis IV: Third Rome add-on, Russian rulers gain a whole range of new management options, including the annexation of entire states and not just separate provinces. The head of the nation also has to struggle with the Orthodox Church dominant on the Russian land. By choosing which saint to revere on icons you can increase the strength of your empire from various bonuses. Now you can also turn higly developed provinces into metropolises, which becomes another tool for increasing your power and independence of the nation, and influences your relation with the Orthodox clergy.

In order to succeed you will also need military force – developers offered players unique units, such as the Moscow Riflemen. These elite Russian soldiers are excellent combatants, but are expensive to maintain, which makes it harder to keep the stability within the country. As your nation increases in power, it is going to need a larger territory. From now on players can colonize wild Syberian terrains, bordering with your country, without worrying that the local populace would rebel against you.
