Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth is a classic dungeon-crawler RPG, in which we observe the action from the perspective of the first person. The Japanese studio Atlus is responsible for creating the cycle, which was born in 2007 on the Nintendo DS console. Over the years, Etrian Odyssey has seen several major releases and extended remakes on the Nintendo 3DS console, as well as three side games (Etrian Mystery Dungeon, Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 and Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth). The creators of all titles drew inspiration from classics such as Wizards and Bard's Tale, as well as the first productions from the Shin Megami Tensei series.
Story
As in other products under the signboard Etrian OdysseyThe storyline in the game has a secondary role and is not exposed during the game. Players take on the role of an adventurer whose dream is to reach the very top of the mighty Yggdrasil, an unimaginably large tree in the middle of which there is a maze full of dangers.
Mechanics
Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth is a traditional dungeon-crawler. We observe the game from the perspective of the first person. In the course of the game, we control a team of four people, which can be composed of heroes belonging to four different races and representing one of the ten available character classes. Traditionally, we can freely decide on the path of development of heroes, choosing new skills along with the experience gained.
The daredevils visit vast levels and labyrinths divided by a chessboard of square fields. In addition to hostile creatures, players will find numerous traps, portals, as well as puzzles, the solution of which unlocks the way forward. Random fights take place in turn-based mode. We use standard attacks as well as spells and special abilities. The game also included a key option associated with the series, i.e. the ability to draw your own underground maps and mark their characteristic points on the dedicated lower screen of the console.
Technical issues
As far as audiovisual content is concerned Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth does not differ significantly from its predecessors issued on 3DS. Creators still use the same engine and technology, as well as three-dimensional models of their opponents. There are also two-dimensional portraits created by Yujie Himukai and music composed by Yuzo Koshiro. Both artists have accompanied the cycle from its very beginning.
