Etherium is the second, after Stellar Impact, space strategy produced by a small Parisian studio Tindalos Interactive. This time, however, we are dealing with a title that, in addition to multiplayer gameplay, also offers an extensive campaign for a single player.
The plot of the production tells the story of a war waged by three powerful empires in a distant part of the cosmos. The subject of the battle is control over a certain planet and its moons, which are the source of the title etherium, a rare and extremely valuable resource. We start the campaign by choosing one of the available factions. Each has its own specializations and weaknesses, as well as unique opportunities such as weather control, forward-looking and advanced espionage. The game has a non-linear structure, as we decide for ourselves in what direction we will conquer (whether to one of the planet's continents or to one of its moons), how we will allocate our resources and what part of our forces we will use to defend a controlled territory - at any moment we can be attacked by the other powers. There are also elements such as technological research, resulting in access to new units, buildings or skills, and diplomatic contacts with native representatives of neutral factions, who can share their achievements in the field of science or join our ranks.
Climate and weather are of serious importance in the conduct of warfare. A sandstorm allows you to approach enemy positions unnoticed, and an icy river gives you the opportunity to lead a tank division through the river, while the same type of unit becomes moderately useful in muddy marshes. Therefore, when drawing up a conquest strategy, one should take into account not only the defense or wealth of raw materials in the area, but also the environment and atmospheric conditions in the area. It is also worth mentioning that the planet on which the game takes place, and its natural satellites, represent a very diverse climate, ranging from sun-burned emptiness, through archipelagos of islets on endless seas, to ice deserts. Thus, it is also important to carefully select units for particular tasks from among infantry, tanks, vessels and aircrafts as well as huge, destructive colossuses.
Etherium has been enriched with three-dimensional graphics. Bearing in mind that a small and independent team is responsible for the creation of the title, one should not expect from it the level characterized by high-budget AAA productions, however, the luminaire can boast relatively detailed models and a large number of special effects.
As mentioned at the beginning, this production includes not only a single player campaign, but also a multiplayer mode. It offers a classic skirmish mode with a maximum of four players.
