Epic Pinball is a shareware simulator of popular slot machines, commonly called flippers. Epic Megagames was commissioned by Digital Extremes, a Canadian studio founded by James Schmalz, which is also responsible for the commercial version of the game, known as Silverball. A characteristic feature of this title is the impressive number of tables available, two of which: Crash & Burn and Deep Sea have also been released separately as a stand-alone game.
The game uses the classic top-down perspective. During the game we can see only a part of the table on the screen, and the camera shows only the part on which the ball is currently placed. The game consists in gaining as many points as possible by performing subsequent tasks consisting in hitting specific ramps and bumpers in a given order. Raster graphics of the game in 320x240 resolution presents a high level of performance for its time. The tables are colorful and full of details, and the rules of scoring on each of them is introduced by a detailed instruction. Up to 4 players can participate in the game at the same time, competing with each other alternately.
The complete Epic Pinball set consists of three independent packages, each containing four tables in different styles. Fantasy and science fiction dominate among them, although we can also find adventure, submarine or racing tables. The first package is Android, Pot of Gold, Excalibur and Crash and Burn. In the second you will find Magic, Jungle Pinball, Deep Sea and Enigma. The last table, in which the appearance and distribution of elements changes during the game, deserves special attention. The third package includes Cyborgirl, Pangaea, Space Journey and Toy Factory tables. In the version released on the CD we will also find an African Safari table, not available in the shareware version.
In later versions of the game instead of the original Android table you will find its modified version called Super Android. The Polish edition prepared by xLand was released in our country under the name Fliper and contains eight tables from the first and second package. In 2011, the game was partially remake on mobile platforms with iOS, in which under the name Retro Pinball there were refreshed versions of three original tables: Super Android, Crash and Burn and Pangaea.
