En Garde! is an action adventure game set in fantasy 17th century. The game is filled with fast-paced, spectacular battles, acrobatics and humor. These elements are complemented by the colorful comic book-like visuals.
It was developed by Fireplace Games and was originally an award-winning student project.
Plot
The game stars Adalia de Volador - a charismatic adventurer and swashbuckler waging war against the tyrannical Count-Duke during her daring escapades.
Mechanics
En Garde! is a third-person game revolving around combat and exploration. The main protagonist is an excellent fencer, though we must make proper use of her skills to prevail. Every encounter requires maintaining balance between offense and defense. Countering lets us stagger enemies and go on an offensive, while dodging lets us get out of tight spots.
The game strongly encourages improvisation and use of the environment. Adalia can stun foes by throwing crates at them, drop chandeliers, fire nearby cannons, kick enemies off ledges or topple weapon racks upon them to crush them.
Her agility comes in handy in combat and exploration. The heroine can skillfully jump between stationed boats, climb and swing over pits. With panache, she moves through such locations as 17th-century markets, palaces and dungeons.
