An RTS, in which we command an army of ants. Empire of the Ants is an adaptation of a novel of the same name, written by Bernard Werber and published in 1991.
Empire of the Ants is a real-time strategy game developed by Tower Five, responsible for games such as Lornsword Winter Chronicle and XIII. It's an adaptation of a novel of the same name, written by Bernard Werber and published in 1991.
Plot
Empire of the Ants takes place in a French forest, more specifically - in a conflict-ridden world of ants. The player controls the "savior" of the titular insects, whose task is to lead them to domination over the local ecosystem.
Mechanics
Our objective in Empire of the Ants is to create a prosperous anthill. To do so, we must gather supplies, expand our headquarters and recruit troops to ensure our safety. In the longer term we can ally with the local wildlife and lead our armies to battle for new territories. Combat requires tactical thinking and skillful use of our ants' abilities. The game features a day-and-night cycle as well as changing seasons, which affect the environment and the mechanics.
We can also directly control a single ant from the third-person perspective (TPP), interacting with other ants and denizens of the forest.
Due to the gameplay's complexity, the developers have prepared special tutorials to introduce us to the game; aside from that, the difficulty is modifiable and adjustable to one's individual preferences.
Game modes
Empire of the Ants can be played in singleplayer and multiplayer.
Technical aspects
Empire of the Ants runs on the Unreal Engine 5. The game's visuals are very high quality; the locations are densely vegetated and filled with detail, just like the ants themselves.

Niche Gamer: 7.5 / 10
Empire of the Ants is an exceptional entry-level strategy game that lets players relax once in a while during exploration-based stages. Some things are unrealistic or inaccurate but are in service of making an enjoyable experience. At the very least, it has some of the most realistic visuals on current-gen consoles.
COGconnected: 90 / 100 by Alex Everatt
Empire of the Ants is an excellent game. This is one of those games that seemingly come out of nowhere but will likely be a beloved favourite for many gamers for years to come. While a lot of these gameplay aspects have been seen before in other games, the way they’re included here, through the eyes of an ant, can be quite unique. The visuals are outstanding and the music is brilliant. There are some challenges with controls and the camera, especially in confined spaces or when your ant is upside-down. And unfortunately, I didn’t get an opportunity to experience the multiplayer aspects. Fortunately, the single-player experience is overall so well done that I’d consider the multiplayer mode a nice bonus more than anything. If you’re looking for a unique gaming real-time strategy experience, then you really can’t go wrong with Empire of the Ants.
Quest Daily: 6 / 10 by Tom Greer
While the graphics transport you to another world, the gameplay falls disappointingly short — leaving a taste in my mouth, I imagine, similar to how Ant-rid tastes to ants.
