A turn-based strategy from Relic Entertainment, known for the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Company of Heroes series. Earth vs Mars allows us to take part in the conflict between two planets, sending hybrids of various creatures into battle (like human rhinos or squirrel cows). The presentation of the turn-based battles is similar to Advance Wars series.
Earth vs Mars is a turn-based strategy game, telling the story of the titular war between Earthlings and Martians. It was developed by Relic Entertainment studio, known for the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Company of Heroes series. The game was created as part of the Relic Labs initiative. The team behind it creates projects that stand out against the background of its standard portfolio, which mainly consists of RTS titles.
Story
Earth vs Mars transports us to a universe where Earth has been visited by Martians for decades, abducting animals and humans to create bizarre hybrids. When the inhabitants of the red planet launch a full-scale invasion on our globe, the fate of the Earth rests in the hands of a group of leaders.
In favor of the Earthlings is the fact that they have at their disposal the so-called Splice-O-Tron, a device that allows them to combine Earth creatures, turning them into real super soldiers.
Gameplay
In Earth vs Mars we watch events in an isometric view.
Tactical combat
The game takes place on maps covered with a grid of square fields, across which we move our units. We can command standard infantry and vehicles, combat machines, and also the aforementioned hybrids.
The battles take place in turn-based mode, and the units participating in them are viewed on a separate screen divided into two parts, much like in the Advance Wars series.
Hybrid units and commanders
The Splice-O-Tron device allows us to send combinations of creatures into battle. Some example include the fast and agile cheetah-fly, the rhino-man specializing in frontal attacks, or the squirrel-cows hiding in the forests. Each of these hybrids has an individual set of skills, along with their strengths and weaknesses. As we progress we gain access to increasingly sophisticated creatures, but the same applies to our enemies.
The game also allows us to choose commanders, who are also equipped with unique active and passive abilities. Their proper use can change the fate of many battles.
Game modes
Earth vs Mars offers a single-player campaign with over 30 missions to complete. Additionally, the authors have implemented a multiplayer mode that allows us to take control of both the Earth's forces and the Martians. There are also battles we can wage against AI.
A built-in map editor deserves a separate mention, allowing for the creation of our own levels and scenarios.
