Dust is a Polish FPS published in 1999. The company Optimus Nexus, which no longer exists today, is responsible for its creation. The player takes on the role of a former soldier fighting for life on the distant moon of Arena.
For hundreds of years people systematically colonized increasingly distant corners of the universe, creating an Empire. However, mankind could not get rid of the tendency to war. To prevent the escalation of conflicts, the opposing parties were brought by the Empire to the desert moon, called the Arena. In case of refusal, the fighters were threatened with final annihilation. Among the hurricanes and sandstorms, warfare was being waged with the use of the latest technologies, and therefore, after just a dozen or so years, the natural satellite turned into a great battlefield. Among the remains there were hired robbers, smugglers, fraudsters and murderers.
The action of Dust takes place in 2798. The player takes on the role of a former soldier of the elite Light Imperial Cavalry regiment, a unit that collapsed as a result of corruption among officers. The hero manages to reach the Arena with money from the sale of equipment and the rest of his stomach. There, on his own, he searches for the remains of past wars.
Dust is one of the first Polish first person shooters. It is distinguished by the need to use well-thought-out tactics and efforts of grey cells in order to solve the problems encountered, because only a good planning of actions allows you to survive in an unfriendly environment of the Arena.
The game uses the Glide rendering system, which on the day of its release was a real breakthrough. Dust was considered to be very attractive visually at that time - it was even called the Polish Quak. The dust was originally prepared to run on MS DOS using the DOS4GW environment, so that the Optimus Nexus work can only be run on computers with Windows 95/98 installed.
