Dungeon Rats Description
Dungeon Rats for PC is a tactical RPG employing a turn-based combat system. The game was developed by Iron Tower, a studio responsible for Age of Decadence.
Plot
The game takes place in the same universe as Age of Decadence, mixing the elements of Roman Empire, and a post-apocalyptic fantasy. The titular Dungeon Rats is the moniker of 7th Heavy Armored Division of the Imperial Guards. The player assumes the role of a prisoner sentenced to life in an enormous mine. We begin our journey on the bottom, and try to fight our way up to the surface.
Mechanics
If Age of Decadence was a story-heavy game, and allowed the player to complete every quest without resorting to bloodshed, Dungeon Rats for PC is a complete opposite, as it’s a game focused mainly on combat. The turn-based system, present in the previous game from Iron Tower makes a comeback, receiving many upgrades and tweaks. This time, the player takes over a group of heroes, while combat is built around flanking attacks and using objects found in the game world.
Such description of the combat system doesn’t mean that our hero is a simple brute. Instead, the most important attribute is charisma, as the number of squad members and the choice of volunteers is directly related to it. In all, the player can choose from ten potential companions, and the party has a four man limit. What’s interesting, the acquired skill points are divided between all party members. As a result, the level-up speed depends on the number of party members.
The game offers three difficulty levels, with vivid names: Nice Guy, Tough Bastard, and Murderous Psychopath. Even the easiest one means a lot of hardships for the player, who will often see his party on their knees. What is commendable, each encounter was directed manually, to be the most interesting, and challenging at the same time.
