Dreadful River is an action adventure game with RPG and strategy elements. It was developed by SureAI, a team originating from the modding scene which gained worldwide recognition with their total conversion mods of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim, namely Nehrim: At Fate's Edge and Enderal: Forgotten Stories respectively.

Plot

Dreadful River is set in a fantasy world, in an invaded kingdom. With defeat looming on the horizon, the ruler gathered his most loyal guards and, aboard a small raft, set out with them on a journey down a rushing river. The king and his subordinates must survive at all costs and discover the truth behind the Eternal Crown, the kingdom's last hope.

Mechanics

Dreadful River makes use of the third-person perspective (TPP). The player traverses the world aboard a raft. The river is randomly generated, so each playthrough takes us into new lands. Although we'll spend most of our time on the raft, we can also disembark and visit the settlements near the shoreline, where merchants and other opportunities await.

We must always be on guard, as we're constantly being threatened by the changing weather, the day-and-night cycle (as it's more difficult to spot danger in the dark) and lurking enemies. They can attack us from the shore and the water. The player will face archers, javelin throwers, battle mages and many others. It's up to us whether we'll confront them or try to avoid them.

As we progress, we acquire valuable resources, useful equipment and crafting ingredients, upgrade the raft to hold a larger crew and upgrade the mages, archers and spearman protecting the king. We can recruit new crew members from settlements and mercenary camps.
