Mechanics

Dread Pilots is a sandbox RPG with roguelike, survival, strategy and action elements. In terms of visuals, it's reminiscent of Klei Entertainment's previous 2D games, such as Oxygen Not Included and Griftlands.

Plot

The Dredge is a pocket dimension resembling nightmarish outer space, inhabited by fanatical cultists, bloodthirsty beasts, AIs and vampires. Brave pilots delve into this dangerous place to extract valuable resources, technology and secrets.

Mechanics

Most of Dread Pilots makes use of the top-down perspective, the player controlling their ship while exploring the dangerous realm. The game has an open-ended structure, letting us decide our destinations, ways to grow and gather funds. Players can extract resources (using tools such as a giant drill), trade and engage in other activities.

An important part of the game is establishing relationships with NPCs, who may turn out to be future clients or valuable allies. Their view of our character differs depending on our actions - they'll treat a well-known merchants differently from a notorious thief. Maintaining positive relations with the Merchant's Guild or the rock worshipping Xenolith may turn out extremely useful when in need of help.

Dread Pilots requires us to manage resources, constantly upgrade our equipment and encounter enemies. There are many dangers present in the game, such as giant insects, hostile ships and unpredictable anomalies. Oftentimes, rather than fight, it's better to evacuate ASAP.
