Distant Worlds 2

Distant Worlds 2 is an RTS from the 4X subgenre developed by Code Force studio. This is a continuation of the warmly welcomed Distant Worlds from 2010. The developers decided to focus on developing and improving the already existing mechanics. The second part features 3D graphics and a much larger maps scale (up to 2000 star systems) than the predecessor. n addition, Distant Worlds 2 gives you a lot of freedom in creating your own gameplay.

Plot

The game has 2 game modes: a story mode and a sandbox mode. In the story mode, each of the available factions (there are 7 of them within the main content) plays its own story and must achieve the tasks set by the game. Sandbox mode, on the other hand, allows us to set up victory conditions.

Mechanics

Distant Worlds 2 allows the player to lead a galactic empire. The game uses mechanics known from other games in the 4X subgenre. This means that we can establish colonies, discover new worlds, extract resources and conduct space diplomacy.

We start the game by choosing the faction (each gives unique bonuses) and setting the rules of the game. The game features an extensive ability to create your own scenarios. For For example, we can select the size of the map (up to a maximum of 2000 star systems) and the level of advancement of the civilisation with which we will start. In addition, the developers have implemented an extensive map creator, thanks to which the player has the opportunity to personally design every, even the smallest, element - from the arrangement of star systems to the selection of habitats for space monsters.

The main objective is to develop an empire. In order to do so, you must take care of the economy and discover new resources. There are 2 types of them - construction materials (necessary for the functioning of the colony and building ships and structures) and luxury materials (giving various bonuses to the planets, to which they are delivered).

In order to distribute the resources evenly throughout our empire it is necessary to develop the civil fleet, which works parallel to our actions. It is independent from the player, but can be regulated by laws and edicts. It is important to take care of it, because it acts as a circulatory system for our empire and is extremely vulnerable to enemy attacks.

From time to time we will encounter other empires on our way, with whom we can establish diplomatic relations. The final means of negotiation is war, which will give us the opportunity to fight space battles. Skirmishes are held in real time, and it is possible to give control to the AI or command the ships by ourselves. The game is not forcing on the player the maximum size of the war fleet, this is only dependent on the strength of the economy. In addition, the game also allows you to assault planets, but we can't be involved in ground battles.

The developers have given the player a lot of freedom regarding what he wants to deal with personally, and what the AI is supposed to deal with. From economics, through ship creation to fighting - we can take care of everything personally or delegate various tasks to the AI.

For the game, the developers created a new 64-bit engine, which allowed to move the game in 3D.
