Distant Star: Revenant Fleet PC

Distant Star: Revenant Fleet is a space RTS with rougelike elements, and a storyline that changes with each new playthrough. The studio responsible for this game is Blazing Griffin from Scotland, which in 2011 acquired the rights to the 4X strategy game Distant Star, released on iOS, and decided to use this universe in their new game.

Plot

Distant Star: Revenant Fleet tells a story of the A'kari nation that comes from Mars and regards themselves as the last descendants of mankind in space. After one of the most brutal battles in the history of space, which ended in A'kari being exiled from their home world, the remains of their fleet must unite in order to rebuild their old military power. Player's goal is to lead A'kari through many space battles and to finally defeat their biggest enemy – the Orthani – a race known for their ruthlessness.

Mechanics

The gameplay is a little bit similar to the cult classic Homeworld series, but the difference here is that the events are not presented in full 3D, but rather from a top-down perspective. Battles take place in a randomly generated galaxy and, depending on the choices made throughout the game, players can experience a different story. We can choose from many units that can be created from scratch by equipping them with different weapons, onboard systems and special modules. The game gives players a lot of room for tactics and it requires them to be able to adapt to circumstances that can change at any point, which means that the fleet must be constantly upgraded. With battles comes experience that allows players to unlock new technologies and prepare the armies for the final confrontation.

Technical aspects

The graphics are good even if they look a little bit like from a mobile title. 3D space ship models are detailed, and the backgrounds, which look like they were drawn with pastels, depict nice, cosmic views such as space graveyards filled with debris.
