Devil’s Third Online is a multiplayer-focused, PC version of the third-person perspective action game Devil’s Third which after many troubles and lengthy development was released on Nintendo WiiU (despite the fact that PS3 and Xbox 360 versions were planned as well). Both games were developed by Japanese studio Valhalla Game Studios founded by ex-employees of Tecmo: Satoshi Kanematsu and Tomonobu Itagaki (the co-creator of such hits like Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden).
Plot
The story of the game takes place in the same reality as its console version. In the future, due to serious anomalies that occurred on the Earth's orbit (the so-called Kessler syndrome), electronic devices malfunctioned and thus the capabilities of traditional military forces were limited. Due to that, special infantry forces became the key element of all military operations. These squads consist of perfectly trained warriors the role of which players assume.
Mechanics
Devil’s Third Online gameplay mechanics aren’t very different than in its console predecessor. Battles between the characters controlled by players are the key element of the game. However, during the duels the warriors not only use gunfire typical for online shooters, but many melee weapons as well. This adds elements of classic Japanese slasher games to the gameplay. In difference to Devil’s Third on WiiU, the gameplay completely lacks any singleplayer campaign and it focuses on online multiplayer only. Due to that, character and skills development as the game progresses is an inseparable part of the experience.
Technical aspects
Since the game was released in 2015, graphics and animations in Devil’s Third Online are quite mediocre. This was definitely caused by the prolonged development. The game is distributed by using the “free to start” model. It means that the basic version of the game can be downloaded for free, but in order to achieve anything in the game one must buy additional DLC packs. It is worth mentioning that the developers decided to adapt the game to various cultural differences across the world and hired local developers to work on regional versions of the game.
