Desperados Video Game Series
A series of tactical real-time strategies, launched in 2001 by the game Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive. Behind the development of the first two installments of the series, as well as their informal continuation in the form of the game Helldorado, was the studio Spellbound Entertainment. The full-fledged third installment of the series, on the other hand, was developed by the Mimimi Games team, which previously became famous thanks to its warmly received, genre-related production titled Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. The latter was also the first installment of the series, which appeared not only on personal computers, but also on consoles.
The main character of the games under the banner of Desperados is John Cooper - a bounty hunter who, together with a group of loyal companions, shakes up the Wild West in the second half of the 19th century. The first part of the series tells the story of his pursuit of the outlaw known as El Diablo. Its sequel, however, focuses on his tug-of-war with a certain Angel Face, who tortured and killed his brother Ross Cooper. W Helldorado in turn, one of the protagonist's companions - Doc McCoy - is kidnapped and poisoned by the widow of the antagonist from "two"; in order to save him, the protagonist is forced to leave the path of the law. As for the game Desperados III - its action was set before the events presented in the first part of the series. Thanks to this we have the opportunity not only to see the beginnings of John Cooper's career, but also to learn how he met his later friends.
Games from the series Desperados consist of a series of missions taking place on vast maps. In the course of them, Cooper and his team must complete a variety of tasks - from stealing specific items to eliminating targets - often operating at the edge of the law. The gameplay emphasizes freedom of action, but is characterized by a high level of difficulty. The locations are teeming with enemies, and although theoretically nothing prevents you from arranging spectacular shootouts, it is much better to demonstrate tactical sense and act quietly. An important role in these productions is also played by the skillful use of individual characters' abilities and equipment. For example, Kate O'Hara can distract enemies, McCoy is an excellent sniper, while Cooper is a seasoned gunfighter. Things are made a little easier by the fact that the action is shown from a bird's eye view, and the range of sight of enemies is presented in the form of clear cones, so we can quickly discern the situation on the battlefield. In addition, in Desperados III introduced Showdown Mode, which allows us to stop time, give commands to individual characters, and then enforce all orders synchronously.
The first part of the series, viz. Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive, debuted in April 2001. Clearly inspired by the series Commandos the production was an artistic and commercial success, but players had to wait as long as five years, until April 2006, for its sequel. W Desperados 2: Cooper's Revenge the developers introduced a number of innovations, among which the possibility to switch to a camera placed behind the protagonist's back led the way. The title received a moderately warm reception - its storyline was criticized, as well as bugs interfering with play. In June 2007, developers from Spellbound Entertainment studio put into the hands of players the informal third part of the series. Helldorado, for that was the title's name, followed the path set before the second installment of the series, and the biggest novelty it brought was the so-called Movie Mode, in which the player could try his hand as a director of westerns. Like "two", this game did not receive a particularly warm reception, earning rather mediocre ratings (their average according to the Metacritic site is 65%). After the release of the latter item in the subject of the brand Desperados there was silence; in the meantime the series lived up to its cult status. The latter caused THQ Nordic, which took over the rights to the brand, to release the game in June 2020. Desperados III, which is a prequel to the series. The studio responsible for its preparation, Mimimi Games, decided to return to the roots in terms of gameplay and enrich it with a pinch of new solutions. The venture was a success, and the title boasted ratings of over 80% (according to Metacritic).
