Desert Ashes is a turn-based strategy game. The player takes on the role of one of the available commanders and tries to conquer or defend the land under several available scenarios. The title also offers a multiplayer game, in which we play the stories known from the campaign, but instead of AI our opponent is another person.
Desert Ashes, released on PC and PSV, is a strategy game that uses a turn-based combat system. The gameplay is divided into two segments - free movement on the world map and battles in which we give orders to our units. The game was developed by Nine Tales Digital studio.
Mechanics
Desert Ashes offers three separate single-player campaigns. Depending on the choice made, we play the role of commander trying to conquer or defend the land. In both cases, our task is to conquer and maintain as many forts as possible while eliminating the opponent. We increase and improve the army with gained funds, which allows us to achieve victories in subsequent skirmishes. The game also has the day and night cycle which affects the gameplay, for example, rivers freeze after sunset allowing warriors to reach previously inaccessible places on the world map. We observe the action from above, but when the battle begins, the game changes the perspective from which the action is shown, allowing a closer look at the units.
The fights are fought in a turn-based combat system, however, they aren't especially complicated. Individual troops attack each other with a single ability, hoping that their attack will deal more damage. Desert Ashes doesn't offer complex mechanics in this respect. This is slightly different in the case of multiplayer gameplay. Before starting a battle, we can choose perks that improve the specific parameters of the army. Clashes can be played both locally and with people from the other side of the world. In each case, the duel is based on playing a scenario known from the campaign, but this time both sides are controlled by live players.
Technical aspects
Desert Ashes offers simple but original graphics. Luc Bernard, known for his colorful and abstract works, is responsible for designing character models and the world. It's not surprising that heroes are unusual creatures combining features known from fantasy and science fiction.
