The FPS futuristic formula is an extension of the threads from the previous parts of the series. The main character, the Guardian of Resources number 1032, manages to escape at the last moment from the explosion on the planetarium, which in the second part of the game he explored on behalf of the PTMC corporation. Unfortunately, his Pyro GX2 fighter crashes and takes a course straight to the Sun. However, he is saved from oppression by the Red Acropolis research organization ship. Its members reveal to the Guardian that his former employer is involved in spreading a dangerous nanovirus that transforms obedient robots into deadly machines. The main character also learns that the failure of the fighter was the fault of the PTMC corporation. At the helm of a new ship - Pyro GL, the Guardian sets off to destroy a dangerous virus and settle accounts with the former superiors.
The creators of Descent 3 managed to preserve the specific atmosphere of the series, which distinguishes it from the crowd of "doom-like" production. However, the game gained more momentum. Locations on 17 available levels have been robustly expanded. The number and variety of opponents controlled by the improved computerized SI has also been increased. Unlike the first two parts of the series, the player is not doomed to pilot one type of fighter throughout the game. As the plot progresses, access to increasingly powerful weapons and new spacecraft is unlocked. Applied graphics engine Fusion enabled not only smooth rendering of 3D environment, but also the use of six-step, full freedom of movement.
Without the campaign for a single player Descent 3 offers extended multiplayer mode. Up to 16 players can participate in the game via LAN or the Internet. In addition to the well-known gameplay options like Anarchy (each against each other) and Team Anarchy there are several new ones, including Capture the flag, Observer, Entropy, Hoard and Monsterball, as well as the possibility to play in cooperation with the solo campaign missions.
