Case Zero is the first expansion to a TPP action game – Dead Rising 2, in which one has to fight hundreds, if not thousands of zombies that flooded Fortune City. The DLC has been released before the base game and constitutes a kind of prolog to the events from the sequel. Both the base game and the expansion have been developed by Capcom.
Plot
The action of the Case Zero DLC is set 2 years after the events depicted in Dead Rising, and 3 years before the series’ second installment. A player gets to control Chuck Greene (the protagonist of the base game), who, along with his daughter, is stranded in a town of Still Creek. Chuck’s little girl was bitten by a zombie, so the main protagonist has to administer Zombrex shots to her every twelve hours. Things get complicated when the car supplying the town with the vaccines suddenly vanishes – at this moment, Chuck is left with no other choice but to leave the city and set off in search of the missing car.
Mechanics
The Case Zero DLC is a kind of preview of what one can experience while playing the base game. All the abilities featured by the main protagonist remain the same – this includes the possibility of using various items to create special weapons for fighting all the zombies. Crafting new types of apparatus belli provides Chuck with additional Prestige Points that later on can be spent to level him up. Like in the previous installment of the series, a player can make his character stronger, faster, and more damage resistant. Everyone, who downloads Case Zero and then purchases Dead Rising 2 can export all the character stats from the DLC to the base game. This way, when starting the base game after finishing the Case Zero adventure, a player has at his disposal all the Prestige Points, alternative outfits, and the leveled-up character from the DLC.
Gameplay mechanics look almost the same as in the base game – one has to face hordes of the living dead, advancing on the player in hundreds, if not thousands. In combat, one can use many fancy weapons, selecting from the more standard to those unconventional ones, such as flowerpots, umbrellas, and teddy bears. The main asset of the game is the fact that one can use nearly any object found just lying around, and it is up to the player’s imagination what is he going to have some fun with.
