Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is an action game with survival horror elements, created by Spike Chunsoft studio. The developer has worked on the critically acclaimed 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward. The production made its debut on PlayStation Vita in 2014, and after years it was released on other platforms. The title is a spin-off of the Danganronpa series.
Plot
Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls takes place between the events told in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. The game's main character is Komaru Naegi, the sister of the protagonist of the first of the mentioned games, Makoto. The girl spent the last year in confinement - her prison was an apartment building located in Towa City. Attacked by dangerous, aggressive Monokuma robots, the heroine flees to the streets of the city ruled by children's gang, trying to create a utopia for minors. The youngsters intend to do this by murdering adults using the previously encountered machines. Komaru quickly joins forces with Toko Fukawa(also known from Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc), who suffers from split personality and shares her body with the murderous Genocide Jack. The duo's task is not only to survive in very unfavorable circumstances but also to discover the identity of the person behind the acts of violence committed by the children.
Mechanics
Unlike Danganronpa's main visual novel series, Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is a dynamic action game observed from the third-person perspective. The game focuses on solving uncomplicated environmental puzzles and fighting opponents. By eliminating enemies, the player receives so-called Monocoinswhich we can spend on modifying weapons, as well as getting new abilities and improvements for the character, like more health points. The game offers three difficulty levels, varying in terms of opponents' endurance, the amount of ammunition and the option to use Toko's unique ability.
We spend most of the game as Komaru. The girl is armed with a peculiar weapon - the so-called Hacking Gun, which looks like a megaphone, allowing her not only to eliminate opponents but also to control them, activate certain devices, and scan the environment for hidden objects and clues. Weapons require a variety of ammunition. The teenager is accompanied by the previously mentioned Toko Fukawa, equipped with an equally specific weapon - charging the Stun Gun allows her to transform into Genocide Jack. She fights with powerful scissors - we increase their power and the range of attacks by charging it.
Technical aspects
Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, released on the PC, PS4 and PSV, is based on technology developed for the main Danganronpa series. The production is therefore characterized by decent three-dimensional graphics, maintained in the anime style. The game features both Japanese and English voice-overs.
