Cycling Evolution 2009 is an attempt by Freedom Factory to respond to the popular Pro Cycling Manager series. The production is addressed to road cycling enthusiasts who would like to get to know the arcana of this sport "from the kitchen".
The player has the opportunity to play the role of a professional cycling team manager. His duties include establishing tactics during the stage, but also financial management, appointing a team for individual races, logistics, transferring competitors and establishing training regimes.
Cycling Evolution 2009 offers two fun options - a single race or a managerial mode covering the whole season. The database in the game contains about 40 teams and 1000 riders, most of which are authentic team names and player names, while in other cases minor changes have been made - e.g. Alberto Contador to Alberto Cuntador. The race calendar contains the most important cycling events of the year, although the lack of an official UCI license prevented the use of real event names, for example the Giro d'Italia functions as Volta Italiana in the game. However, this inconvenience can be remedied with the built-in editor.
The game includes two aspects. The first one is team management, including negotiating contracts with cyclists, concluding advertising contracts or setting the schedule of starts in races. The most dynamic element of the game, however, is directing the team on the route of each stage - dictating the pace, assigning players to escapes, etc. The most dynamic element of the game is directing the team on the route of each stage - dictating the pace, assigning players to escapes, etc. It is also possible to manipulate the speed of time, which allows to shorten the monotonous fragments of the struggle.
Cycling Evolution 2009 visual setting points to the low-budget character of the production, which can be seen especially in the animations of cyclists' movement. As in the Pro Cycling Manager series, however, the creators decided to use filters to soften the image, so that the presentation of the races is more dynamic.
Note: in 2013 UIG Entertainment decided to re-edit Cycling Manager 2009, this time under the name Radrennsport Manager Pro 2013.
