This is the first installment of a popular investigation-themed game series Danganronpa, recreated specifically for owners of the PlayStation VR sets; the franchise has been developed by Spike Chunsoft - a Japanese team. The player is taken to a mysterious school for the most outstanding students, which is governed by an electric teddybear called Monokuma.
Cyber Danganronpa VR is a PS4 game adaptating the first installment of the detective visual novel series Danganronpa to work with VR technology. The creators of the original, Spike Chunsoft, are responsible for the production.
Story
Cyber Danganronpa VR takes us to a mysterious school for the gifted, managed by an electronic mascot - a black-and-white teddy bear known as Monokuma. From the very beginning, students find out that they are trapped in the building, and one way to get out is to kill another student without getting caught by the others. In case of a murder, class trials are organised, in which the characters try to find out which of their peers are guilty of the crime.
Game mechanics
The game is divided into a number of chapters, and each can be divided into two stages. Initially, the gameplay resembles the school life simulator known from the Persona jRPG series: we visit a mysterious school and try to establish friendly relations with other students. At some point, a murder takes place and the investigation phase begins, culminating in a so-called school trial. The task of the players is simple: to identify the person who murdered one of the students. The problem is that if we point out incorrectly, all but the culprits of the murder will be sentenced by Monokuma to a spectacular execution. We refute or support the arguments of other characters in mini game. We check the truthfulness of testimonies using a special sensor, and refute false statements by firing Truth Bullets - all this requires reflexes as well as a sense of observation and association of facts.
Technical aspects
The developers decided to use the fourth generation Unreal Engine technology which is why Cyber Danganronpa VR offers fully three-dimensional graphics, including character models (the original two-dimensional characters were placed in a 3D environment). The game retains the atmosphere of the original, with strongly exaggerated character designs and dialogue lines appearing as material subtitles, often literally overturned (or thrown or destroyed). The game requires a PlayStation VR set.
