An expansion for Crusader Kings II, a 2012’s grand strategy game by Paradox Interactive and the second installment of the series based on the mechanics of the Europa Universalis franchise. Crusader Kings II: Charlemagne is focused on the eponymous Charles the Great, king of the Franks and the founder of the Holy Roman Empire. The action takes us to the year 769, to the early years of his reign.

Crusader Kings II: Charlemagne Description

Crusader Kings II: Charlemagne is another add-on for Crusader Kings II, a grand strategy game, released in 2012, based on Europa Universalis mechanics. The expansion focuses on the eponymous Charlemagne, a Frankish king and the founder of the Holy Roman Empire.

Charlemagne takes us back to 769, to the beginning of Charlemagne’s reign. The country that he created in 800, consisting of Kingdom of Germany, Kingdom of Italy and Burgundy, was a medieval continuation of the idea and political shape of the Western Roman Empire that formally existed in the 4th and the 5th century. The campaign introduced by this expansion focuses on the most important events of Charlemagne’s reign and the conflicts fought during that period.

Along with the add-on, we get a number of new special events closely related to the eponymous character, new cultures absent in the original Crusader Kings II, and a new system of seasons and climate changes. The expansion also brings a few changes (such as new regency system) and completely new features, e.g: a possibility of creating a new country along with its flag and unique name. Our actions as a medieval emperor are summed up by special annual chronicles.
