Plot
The action takes place between the 16th and 18th century, when countries such as England, France, Spain, Portugal, Saxony, Prussia, Russia, Venice, Austria, Turkey, and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were superpowers that shaped the entire Europe and the fate of many lesser nations.
Mechanics
The game provides a large variety in terms of the available campaigns as well as the places where they occur. In total, there are 33 missions within four campaigns and 12 historical missions, for example, the Thirty Years’ War. Cossacks features practically the entire Europe. We can lead one of 16 nations, each of which has unique traits, units (there are over 80 in total), technology (over 300 enhancements in the invention system), architecture, and so on. As every other modern production, the title offers division into game modes, so we can play both solo and in a multiplayer mode for up to 8 players over a LAN or the Internet. What’s interesting, up to 8000 units can take part in a battle at the same time. Moreover, the game comes with a random map generator that lets us set many parameters like terrain type, amount of resources, and so on.
Technical aspects

The game supports the maximum screen resolution of 1600x1200. The production also has a built-in history encyclopedia of Europe of the 16th, 17th, and 18th century.

Cossacks: Back To War is a standalone add-on that, apart from new content, offers the campaigns from the vanilla Cossacks: European Wars and the first expansion, Cossacks: Art of War. There is no shortage of novelties — the second ad-on introduces another 100 missions for single player mode, two playable nations (the Swiss and Hungarians) with unique buildings and units as well as additional troops for Turkey and Algiers — camel-riding Bedouins. Traditionally, the player’s task is to build cities, develop technologies, trade, raise armies, wage wars, conduct diplomacy, and so on. In total, we can lead 20 different European nations to glory. The developers significantly enhanced the computer AI and introduced over 30 new units.

The first official expansion for Cossacks: European Wars, a real-time strategy by GSC Game World that recreates the reality of the 17th and 18th century. The Art of War expands mainly the single player content but it isn’t devoid of some changes in multiplayer as well. The biggest novelties include two new playable nations: Bavarians and Danes. Apart from them, Cossacks: The Art of War introduces five new campaigns in which we lead such countries as Prussia, Austria, Saxony, Algiers, and Poland to battle. In them, we can take part in historical missions and see their alternate course. The gameplay at sea was enriched with seven ships, including the famous Victoria. Other noteworthy enhancements of The Art of War include the possibility of creating teams that consists of both live players and AI-controlled ones, more intuitive interface, a map editor, and the match recording and replaying feature.
