Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear!

Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! is an attempt by Western Civilization Software studio to convert an extremely successful board game. Uwe Eickert, the designer of the paper prototype, was involved in the work on the computer adaptation.

The action of the game was set in the realities of World War II. In June 1941 the Third Reich attacked the Soviet Union. The surprised Soviets easily succumb to the pressure of the German troops. Operation Barbarossa has a chance to end with a great success and conquering Moscow. But then comes winter, which definitely weakens the aggressors. The Red Army not only stops retreating, but also begins to grow in strength. A Russian bear wakes up slowly....

Events connected with the activities on the eastern front provide a historical background for the game. The game includes three campaigns: Awakening the Bear! (10 boarder scenarios), Frontier (9 new scenarios) and Commanding Heights (5 new scenarios), and a single Partisan Road scenario.

Mechanics Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! Mostly reproduces original solutions. The game takes place in a turn-based system, and players have under command a number of carefully reproduced, historical units. A few exceptions concern, among others, war fog, range of view, maximum level of bunkers, management of action points (PA) and available range of cards (e.g. lack of weapon cards present in the board).

The struggle can take place against computer artificial intelligence or live opponents via the Internet. In the latter case, the creators envisaged two variants of the game - with actions taken simultaneously (WEGO) or alternately (IgoUgo).

Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! clearly refers to the board's original. The two-dimensional tactical map is divided into hexes. Players can also use the three-dimensional view of the battlefield.
