Command: The Silent Service Description
Command: The Silent Service is the fourth stand-alone expansion to the realistic 2013 strategy game Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations. The game focuses on warfare using submarines, showing the use of this type of equipment in different historical periods. Like all previous add-ons, the game was developed by WarfareSims. The publisher is Slitherine Ltd.
Plot
Command: The Silent Service presents the history of submarine warfare - from the end of the Second World War to modern times, including, for example, the Korean War. The game shows how the boats, which were initially ridiculed, became a real terror of the seas and oceans - powerful floating fortresses, equipped with tactical nuclear warheads.
Mechanics
Command: The Silent Service is a real-time strategy game. The gameplay consists mainly of observing the map and making decisions on the movements and use of submarines. The players decide to use sea mines, attack targets with torpedoes or ballistic missiles. Our tasks also include eavesdropping the enemy through access to submarine's communication cables and securing the operations of land forces or merchant ships.
The campaign prepared for the game consists of several missions, during which we have a chance to command many well-known ships. These include USS Nautilus (the world's first nuclear submarine), HMS Swiftsure (the scourge of the Soviet northern fleet in 1977) and USS Parche (the most frequently awarded submarine in the history of the United States Navy).
The screenplay was written by Rory Noonan, a well-known member of the Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations community.
Game modes
Command: The Silent Service can be played only solo. The mainstay of the game is an extensive single-player campaign. Before starting the proper game, we can also learn the rules of the game thanks to specially designed tutorials.
Technical aspects
Command: The Silent Service is no different from what we know from the basic version of the game. The two-dimensional visuals consists mainly of maps and numerous statistical screens. The whole thing will not impress anyone, although it undoubtedly fulfills its basic function - it provides the players with the information they need to make decisions.
The add-on was released as a stand-alone game, it is also possible to buy it in the form of a set of missions for Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations.
