Command: Northern Inferno Description
Command: Northern Inferno for PC is a stand-alone expansion pack for a strategy game Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations, which delivered a global take on modern military conflicts and is considered one of the best military strategy games of 2013. Similar to the original game, Northern Inferno was developed by the international Warfare Sims studio and published by the Matrix and Slitherine companies. Interestingly, Command: Northern Inferno can be purchased either as a stand-alone product or a DLC expansion for Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations.
Plot
In comparison to the original game, which depicted an entire series of both historical and fictitious conflicts, Northern Inferno both shortens the time period encompassed and reduces the size of the warfare theater present. The plot circles around fictitious events from the Cold War period (1975) and escalation of tensions existing between two world superpowers - the United States and the Soviet Union. When a British ship belonging to the Queen's Navy gets sunk as a result of accidental actions taken, forces of the Warsaw Pact take on the state of emergency. The world stands in face of another conflict, which this time however, may not be a regular war, but a true nuclear cataclysm. The player's goal is to stop the powers of both Russia and the Warsaw Pact before an apocalypse happens.
Mechanics
Command: Northern Inferno for PC brings mainly a new, extensive campaign comprised of 15 scenarios created by Paul A. Bridge - an active officer in the British Navy and a veteran of the Falklands War. The mechanics as such remain unchanged here, thus the game is an advanced real-time strategy featuring active pause. The new scenarios were designed with as much care as the original ones, taking an entire set of factors influencing the course of war into account. The experience is further accompanied by videoclips with commentaries from the archives. What is more, six training scenarios were created specifically for those unfamiliar with the original Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations.
Game modes
Similar to the original game, Command: Northern Inferno offers exclusively a singleplayer experience.
Technical aspects
The visuals in Command: Northern Inferno for PC have not changed since the original game and make use of the praised, in-house engine. The expansion is obviously compatible with the editor that was once created as part of the original game, Thus the players are capable of creating completely new contents themselves, based on the scenarios introduced in this expansion.
