Command: Desert Storm is the fifth stand-alone add-on to the 2013 strategy game Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations. The game focuses on the famous Desert Storm operation, which ended the Iraqi-Kuwai conflict at the end of the 20th century. Like all previous DLCs, the game was developed by WarfareSims. The publisher iss Slitherine Ltd.
Plot
The Desert Storm is the name of a military operation carried out in 1991 by a coalition of 27 countries (the main role here was played by the armed forces of the United States). The aim was to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi occupation. The offensive was successful and led to the end of the First Gulf War, forever changing the face of the Middle East and the war as such.
This included the first conflict during which aircraft was able to break up infantry troops on their own and the first war during which stealth technology was used. The Desert Storm is also the first theatre of war that was broadcast live on television - for this reason, the operation is sometimes referred to as "The First War of the 21st century".
Mechanics
Command: Desert Storm takes place in real-time. The game consists mainly of observing the map closely and making tactical and strategic decisions concerning movements and the use of individual troops and weapons. The players have groundbreaking war technology from the end of the 20th century at their disposal, such as "invisible" stealth airplanes, submarines, or ballistic missiles. The game also features equipment that was designed but never used on the battlefield (e.g. A-12 Avenger II or F-117X).
The campaign consists of several missions. For the most part (although not in every case), they are based on historical events and present the most important moments of conflict, such as the night of the first coalition attack on Baghdad (January 17, 1991), the "do or die" offensive, which stopped the attack using chemical weapons, or the destruction of the Iraqi fleet stationed in Jaziraat Bubijan.
The game also contains a fictional scenario of modern conflict - the Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear arsenal. The mission was created by Wayne Stiles, a retired US Air Force soldier and member of the Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations community.
Game modes
Command: Desert Storm can only be played solo. The mainstay of the game is an extensive single-player campaign.
Technical aspects
Command add-on: Desert Storm is not visually different from the rest of the series. The visuals consist mainly of two-dimensional maps and statistical screens. The whole thing is not very technologically advanced, but the aim here is mainly to provide the players with the information they need.
It is worth noting, that although the add-on was released in the form of a stand-alone game, it is also possible to buy it in the form of a set of missions for Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations.
