Command & Conquer: Sole Survivor Online
Release Date: November 30, 1997
Strategy, science fiction, RTS, online, multiplayer, internet, LAN
An interesting side view of the real-time strategy series. Unlike the previous parts of Command & Conquer, in this game each player controls one unit and fights other participants in online battles. The game resembles first person shooters, although it is presented in a typical style for the series (view from above). The creators prepared 23 units. Up to 51 people took part in the battles.
Command & Conquer: Sole Survivor Online Description
Sole Survivor Online combines the concept of original Command & Conquer with Doom. Players choose one unit each and are thrown on the board where they try to destroy each other. For each broken vehicle of the enemy, we receive points. If they kill us, we breathe in a randomly selected part of the map and try to fight further - just like in FPS games, with the difference, however, that the action of the game is observed from above, just like in the original version of the program.
The game allows you to fight battles with twenty-three different units. Among them we can also find those which in the basic version of Command & Conquer could not be followed, such as dinosaurs. After the first few games, however, it turns out that such a large choice is very controversial. The infantry is not suitable for anything, unless all players choose soldiers, then the game still makes sense. Light combat vehicles and Visceroid also do not work, so a total of 23 units remain 8, plus the above mentioned dinosaurs. The individual boards resemble alive what we saw in the original Command & Conquer. A certain facilitation are power-ups scattered here and there, which can e.g. accelerate our vehicle, or increase the hitting power of its weapon. And that's basically everything you can say about the game. Weak for "a dynamic action game set in the world of Command & Conquer".
For a fully-fledged product, released two years later after the original, Sole Survivor Online looks very pale. You could try to get more units, additional variety of gameplay and such issues. Unfortunately, the programmers have clearly stated that everyone will be satisfied with what is and nobody will complain. They were wrong. The programme turned out to be a total lapel. Fans of the series, in a huge wave of criticism, razed Westwood Studios to the ground, accusing them of trying to raise money on the subject. The idea of the game, although undoubtedly original, did not meet with a proper response and it is hardly surprising, since after a few hours, Sole Survivor Online became, to put it simply, boring. The only clear point of the program was the number of people who could take part in the skirmish at the same time - as many as 51, the absolute record in this field....
