Coffee Noir

Coffee Noir is a mix of economic strategy, in which we start the coffee business, and visual novels, with a plot that is reminiscent of classic noir stories. This is the debut game of the DOJI studio established in 2012.

Plot

Coffee Noir takes place in Neo-London in an alternative 2021. The main hero of the game is Arthur Oliver, a private detective who, in order to solve the mystery of the disappearance of Richard Kersey, a local businessman, decides to act under the guise of the owner of a coffee production company.

Coffee Noir takes full advantage of classic noir films and Agatha Christie's crime books.

Mechanics

The game is a rather unusual combination of a management game in which we spend a lot of time managing the business, and a visual novel detective adventure. In first section we are responsible for every smallest aspect of our work, from assigning responsibilities to acquiring new contractors, to sales, taking care of finances and planning the marketing campaign. The developers took care of this part of the game by employing professional economists.

The second section is a retrofuturistic visual novel, so we look at atmospheric illustrations and feature scenes, talk to characters and listen to dialogues, gradually discovering fragments of greater intrigue.

Technical aspects

The devs were inspired by classic American comics and detective films. It is from these works that inspiration was taken in terms of the interior design of buildings, the dress of the characters and the small elements that create the noir atmosphere. The graphics presented in Coffee Noir is two-dimensional and kept in a comic book convention. The game is fully sounded - the characters' voice is provided by professional voice actors.
