Code of Princess EX is a refreshed and expanded version of the action game with RPG features titled Code of Princess that debuted in 2012 on Nintendo 3DS and four years later was released on PC. The new version was developed for Nintendo Switch by Studio Saizensen, the creators of the original game. The production process was overseen by Kinu Nishimura – a popular female artist who created character designs for games like Capcom vs. SNK and Street Fighter III.

Plot

Code of Princess EX takes the players to a fantasy world in which people are living in harmony with monsters. When the latter faction decides to perform a coup, the king is forced to give a legendary sword called DeLuxcalibur to her daughter, princess Solange of Deluxii. With this sword, the girl must reclaim the old order in the realm consumed by war. Luckily, she isn’t alone – during her journey, she encounters companions who will help her in realizing the task. It is worth noting that the story is non-linear and the choices made by the players can impact the ending of the game.

Mechanics

The action in Code of Princess EX is presented from a side perspective. During the game, the players can assume the role of more than fifty playable characters and use them to travel through varied locations and fight encountered enemies. The graphics of the game were created in 2.5D technique. This means that although the players are moving in two dimensions, it is possible to shift between various planes, both during exploration and while in combat.

The battles are fought in real time and the system is based on combos. During the fights, the players can use various weapons and special skills obtained during the game. While playing, players are also obtaining experience points that can be spent on developing parameters of characters in order to increase their combat potential. It is worth mentioning that the new version features improved artificial intelligence and the gameplay was balanced.

Game modes

Story mode is the pillar of Code of Princess EX. The game also features Free Play and Bonus Quests modules. The game enables players to play together or against each other via the Internet or through local play.

Technical aspects

As it was mentioned earlier, the graphics of Code of Princess EX were made by using the 2.5D technique. The game uses a cartoon-like style. The new version features slightly refreshed graphics and higher resolution.
