Claire for PC is a retro-stylized, 2D survival horror. The developer behind the game is a team comprised of several people called Hailstorm Games, for which the title is a debut project. The game is inspired by Japanese series such as Silent Hill or Clockwork, and Lone Survivor, released in 2011.

Plot

The main protagonist of the game is a teenage girl named Claire, who is tormented by nightmares caused by stress and tension in her everyday life. The problems in school caused by her mother’s serious illness, and unhappy childhood take their toll. One day, the protagonist wakes up in an abandoned and gloomy school, with mysterious monsters traversing the halls. Her only companion is a dog named Anubis. Claire, accompanied by her four-legged friend, tries to find a way out. During the journey, our protagonist is not only subjected to strange events, but also faces demons of her past. The game offers many endings based on our choices during the game, and the number of people we manage to save.

Mechanics

The gameplay in Claire is similar to the one found in Lone Survivor. The players traverse the two-dimensional locations, taking care of equipment and light sources (a lighter and a flashlight), which allows chasing off or disorienting incoming monsters. However, the game doesn’t encourage fighting with our tormentors. Claire, weak and lacking in fighting skills, has to find hideouts and use items found along the way. Sanity meter is an important aspect of the game – if it reaches the maximum level, the protagonist can die. The authors prepared various difficulty levels, and a New Game Plus mode, allowing the player to start a new game without losing the acquired equipment.

Technical aspects

Claire for PC offers a high quality audio-visual layer, created in the vein of pixel art style. The developers prepared animations that juice up the locations and play of light that further reinforces the atmosphere.
