It was developed by Gunfire Games, a studio established by former employees of Vigil Games, the creators of the Darksiders series. In Chronos, we assume the role of a hero whose task is to free his homeland from a dragon that terrorizes it. The beast lives in a labyrinth full of traps and enemies.

Chronos for PC is an atmospheric fantasy action RPG created with virtual reality headsets, such as Oculus Rift, in mind. It was developed by Gunfire Games which comprises almost entirely of former employees of Vigil Games, the creators of the Darksiders series.

Plot

In the game, we assume the role of a hero whose task is to free his homeland from a dragon that terrorizes it. To do so, we must go through an ancient labyrinth that overflows with traps and minor enemies. During our missions, we uncover the secrets of the place and find out who and why built it. The problem is the fact that the labyrinth was designed to open its gates only once a year. Therefore, if we fail to complete it in time, we will have to wait long 12 months for another chance.

Mechanics

The action is presented from the third-person perspective. Gameplay-wise, the title combines an adventure game with an action RPG that puts an emphasis on exploration and combat. One of the most original features of Chronos is the character development system. Each failed attempt at completing the labyrinth forces us to wait a year, during which the protagonist grows older and his traits change. In practice, it means that when starting out, we assume the role of a strong young man who becomes more powerful, tougher, and more proficient with magic with every try. However, the game can only be ended as an elderly man that casts the perfectly mastered spells instead of swinging his sword.

Technical aspects

Chronos for PC offers high-quality audiovisuals, although it was subject to some simplifications due to the specifics of the VR headsets support. The game has an enthralling, dark atmosphere, strengthened further by slightly artistic graphic style and a matching soundtrack.
