Polish strategy and simulation game with survival elements. In Chernobyl 1986, we take on the role of the administrator of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, who has to deal with the consequences of the accident at reactor no. 4 and prevent further explosions.
Chernobyl 1986 is a game from the borderline of strategy and simulation games, enriched with survival elements. The game was developed by independent Polish studio Detalion Games, and was published by PlayWay.
Plot
Chernobyl 1986 tells the story of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. We play as the manager of this facility and our task is to deal with the consequences of the explosion of nuclear reactor No. 4 and prevent further explosions. The game is inspired by real events that took place on the night of 25-26 April 1986.
Mechanics
Chernobyl 1986 shows the action from the side, as in the famous This War of Mine. The game features a series of diverse missions in which we are given tasks such as coordinating firefighters and extinguishing a reactor fire, evacuating the facility's workers, helping the injured and finally removing radioactive graphite from the plant and its surroundings. This is complicated by the fact that the next explosions are possible, and the murderous radiation that we have to measure is still around. In addition, the fact that many people working on clean-up die in front of their colleagues not only forces us to constantly monitor the health of our crew, but also causes panic among them at any time. For this reason, the key to success during the game is the ability to make rapid decisions, tactical sense, which translates into the need to allocate appropriate tasks to individual subordinates, and cool head, because the implementation of some objectives involves sending people to certain death.
Technical aspects
Chernobyl 1986 features good quality graphics. The game features scenes clearly inspired by the popular HBO series Chernobyl, such as a helicopter crashing while trying to extinguish a reactor fire that falls to the ground due to too much exposure to extreme radiation.
