Chasing Static is a horror adventure game. It was developed by an independent British team Headware Games, formerly known as Sick Chicken Studios, and was published by Ratalaika Games. The source of inspiration for the developers were cult thrillers from the 1980s and modern surrealistic films.
Plot
In Chasing Static we play as Chris Selwood. When the protagonist is caught in a thunderstorm while driving through North Wales at night, he decides to stop at a small café. Soon after, the waitress working there is murdered in front of his eyes by a mysterious and sinister creature. Selwood loses consciousness and later wakes up in a ruined building. Seeking rescue, Chris arrives at an abandoned government facility - Echo Garden - where secret research and experiments have apparently been conducted, resulting in a massive time anomaly. In order to find his way back home, Selwood must try to piece together the scraps of information about the events that took place there and solve their mystery. He uses a mysterious device found in the facility as a help.
Game mechanics
In Chasing Static the action is presented from a first person perspective (FPP). During the game we explore the surroundings, solve puzzles and search for information about mysterious and thrilling events from Echo Garden's past. Locations can be explored at your own pace and in any order.
While there's plenty of traditional puzzles involving finding specific items and using them in a particular way, at one point the protagonist comes into possession of a special tool - an experimental Frequency Displacement Monitoring Device. When set to a certain frequency and with a microphone pointed in the right direction, it allows Dr Williams and her team of scientists to listen in on conversations from the past.
Game length
The developers claim that Chasing Static offers around two hours of gameplay.
Technical aspects
Graphics of Chasing Static is kept in a gloomy retro style, which makes it look like a game from the era of the first PlayStation.
