Ashwalkers: A Survival Journey

Ashwalkers: A Survival Journey (originally called Cendres: A Survival Journey) is an post-apocalypse action adventure game, with survival elements. The game also focuses on the story - it was inspired by the "Choose Your Adventure" books ( the ones in which the reader has influence on the further shape of the story). The game was developed by Nameless XIII studio, founded by Herve Bonin (co-founder of Dontnod Entertainment). The publisher is Dear Villagers.

Plot

Ashwalkers: A Survival Journey is set in a world that was destroyed 200 years earlier by the eruption of a giant volcano. The player controls four heroes who try to survive somehow in difficult conditions.

Mechanics

In Ashwalkers, we observe the action from a third-person perspective. The gameplay is about exploring the locations and acquiring various resources necessary for survival (drugs, food, weapons). We control four characters simultaneously and must take care of both their physical and mental health.

During the journey we encounter all sorts of challenges and dangers, which we have to deal with, using the unique skills of each character. As the game progresses, the player gradually gets to know the characters better and can shape the relationship between them.

The story also plays an important role in the game of Nameless XIII studio, which we can shape by making a number of difficult choices. Depending on our decisions, the story looks a little different each time - it is worth noting that a single playthrough of Ashwalkers takes about two hours, and the game offers up to 34 different endings.

Game modes

In Ashwalkers: A Survival Journey we can play only solo. The core of the gameplay is the story campaign.

Technical aspects

Ashwalkers has an interesting, 3D graphics. The game uses cel-shading technique (it is stylized as an animated film). In addition, the game is mainly black and white, although some elements of the interface and the world are displayed in red (this is the same procedure that is used in some films - for example in the Sin City series).
