Capes is a turn-based strategy with RPG elements, tasking us with leading a team of superheroes to battle. It was developed by the independent studio Spitfire Interactive and publushed by Daedalic Entertainment.
Plot
Capes takes place in a fantasy world, where supervillains have managed to overcome superheroes and achieve their goals. Over twenty years they've been creating a dystopian city and implementing their own laws, outlawing the use of supernatural abilities. All is not yet lost, however, as a group of local superheroes decide to create a resistance movement and face the villains once again.
Mechanics
The gameplay of Capes is shown from the top-down perspective. The game revolves around completing quests; both story missions and patrol missions. It's up to the player whether they'll focus solely on the plot or spend some time on side quests and optional activities.
During gameplay the player leads a team of four superheroes. Each of them has a unique set of abilities, strengths and weaknesses, as well as team skills to use together with their allies. During quests the heroes must frequently face various villains. Combat is turn-based, with success requiring skillful use of each character's advantages, correctly positioning them on the battlefield, thinking tactically and adapting to the constantly changing state of affairs.
Progressing through the game lets us unlock more heroes, gradually expanding our capabilities. Over time we can develop our heroes, unlocking new skills and upgrades. We can also accelerate a specific character's growth by completing challenges prepared for them.
Technical aspects
The visuals of Capes are nothing to sneeze at. The game's artstyle is colorful and cartoonish (especially the character portraits).
