Burnout for PS2, GCN and XBX is the first installment belonging to one of the most popular and acclaimed console racing franchises. Incredibly spectacular car crashes is the best Burnout has to offer - it is worth adding that civillian cars, trucks, buses and other vehicles take part in massive collisions here. Depending on the race, the player can also be rewarded for flawless, however risky driving.
Mechanics
Burnout for PS2, GCN and XBX offers many kinds of experience. Initially, the player can take part only in championships. Those are comprised of regular races requiring the player to cross the finish line first, of course. As the player progresses, they unlock new game modes, such as 1 vs 1 duels, time trials or split-screen challenges for 2 players. Burnout features more than several different machines. Despite the lack of licenses, in-game cars can be easily recognized. Tracks were designed with care as well. Many races take part in urban areas, thus the player needs to pay attention to heavy traffic.
In terms of driving physics, Burnout is typically arcade – handling is intuitive. Boost is a useful addition that can be activated from time to time. In order to refill the bar, the player has to perform hazardous maneuvers, such as near misses for instance. Interestingly, the player can watch a replay of a crash from several different camera angles. It is also worth mentioning that the game features advanced AI of the virtual opponents. However, they happen to bump into different vehicles passed on the way sometimes.
Burnout for PS2, GCN and XBX offers high-quality visuals. Contrary to the Xbox edition, both the versions for PS2 and GameCube were gifted with improved handling precision. Two players at maximum can face each other in duels.
