Brutal Legend for PC, X360 and PS3 is an action game developed by Double Fine Productions, a studio founded by Tim Schafer, a developer that co-created games like Grim Fandango and Psychonauts. Owners of PC, X360 or PS4 who want to start their adventure with this game must be prepared for a spicy dose of heavy metal.

Plot

Brutal Legend for PC, X360 and PS3 tells the story of Eddie Riggs, a technician at heavy metal concerts. He sets the speakers, can navigate the sea of cables – he knows his job well. Although he is quite a competent guitarist, he isn’t the media face of the band. The situation changes when a few drops of his blood touch the massive buckle of his belt. The metal item is revealed to be the nest of a cursed demon. The demon becomes free and transports himself and the protagonist to his original world, the source of the first heavy metal sounds.

The gods of music lefts their territory and started a journey through time and space – it’s how they reached Earth. While they were absent, the realm became flooded by demons. According to the legend, only a true god of metal can clear the place. Unexpectedly, Eddie is revealed to be a pretender to that title. Equipped with a giant, two-handed axe, he starts forging his own legend.

Mechanics

The new game created by Tim Schafer is focused mostly on fighting monsters encountered while traveling through the fully three-dimensional world. In the PC, X360 and PS3 version of Brutal Legend player can eliminate enemies by using Eddie’s skills. In addition to fighting with the giant axe, he can drive Mad Max-like vehicles and float in the air on membrane wings. He can also use an electric guitar, the sounds of which can eliminate even a whole squadron.

In addition to fighting directly, players in Brutal Legend can recruit his or her own small army. When new areas are freed from the control of demons, the now free groups are eager to join the player. Each group features different skills and is efficient in different situations. The player can decide where to send his or hers followers and when should they attack the enemy.

Game modes

Online mode, in which all skills learned during the solo campaign can be used, is a strong advantage of Brutal Legend for PC, X360 and PS3. Fighting other players is similar to a combination of real-time strategy game and action game. Players can build units, take over fan geysers (they represent resources) and lead army to victory. It is also possible to accompany units and lead them to victory.

Technical aspects

The game features a very unusual soundtrack, filled with metal sounds. The player can hear songs of artists like Judas Priest, Candlemass, Black Sabbath and KISS. Eddie is voiced by Jack Black, the leader of Tenacious D and a comic actor. The game is filled with dark humor and heavy metal references.
