Breaking The Rules: The Roman Tournament is the debut project of the independent Italian studio BTR. The title is an extension of the work awarded in the Havok Physics Innovation Contest' 2009 (3rd place).
The action of the game was set in Rome, where champions of martial arts come from all over the world to compete in an uncompromising tournament. The player directs the actions of one of the eight available warriors. The choice of the hero made at the start determines the style of the fight and the arsenal of blows. The skirmishes take place in 8 arenas, reproduced on the basis of authentic sceneries of the Eternal City (including Piazza di Spagna, Ponte S. Angelo).
The creators have prepared many variants of fun. One-person mode allows you to face successive opponents controlled by artificial intelligence throughout the tournament or in a duel in a selected arena (arcade mode). Multiplayer allows you to play with other players on one computer, on a local network or via the Internet. Options include a classic one-on-one fight or team battles (Balanced - 2 on 2, 3 on 3 and 4 on 4, Double dragon - 2 against all and Titan - 1 against all).
The applied combat model has a strictly arcade character. Developers have implemented the Advanced Fighting system based on Havok technology. The result is a natural behaviour of character models (ragdoll) taking into account a number of variables and interactions related to the laws of physics. During the duels, players can derive complex sequences of blows (combo blows), dispense the strength of attacks, and use some elements of the environment (e.g. chairs and tables) as weapons.
Breaking The Rules: The Roman Tournament uses a number of modern solutions such as Motion Blur, DOF and HDR FSAA. Despite this, the quality of the graphics stands out from the quality standards of today's games of this genre.
