Boyfriend Dungeon

Boyfriend Dungeon is an original hybrid, combining elements of classic dungeon crawlers and roguelike game, with elements of dating simulators and visual novel. The title was developed by Kitfox Games - the devs of such games as Shattered Planet from 2014 and Moon Hunters and The Shrouded Isle released three years later.

Mechanics

In Boyfriend Dungeon, the player takes on the role of a hero wandering through a procedurally generated dungeon, in which there are plenty of traps and enemies lurking. At the end of each dungeon there is a prize in the form of a weapon, which is also.... his potential love interest. All the weapons available here are enchanted people, and after going back to the surface, the protagonist can romance them. Whether a weapon will reciprocate their feeling is determined not only by the dialogue lines chosen by the player but also by how often a particular weapon is used in combat. It is worth remembering that the combat potential of weapons increases when they are used in battle, which in turn leads to a closer bond between the weapon and the protagonist.

When traversing the eponymous dungeons, the action was shown in isometric view, while conversations with the characters we saved (including both handsome young men and beautiful girls, as well as a cat, among others) were presented in a manner characteristic of visual novels; the interlocutors were presented in the form of static sprites visible against an equally static backdrop.

Technical aspects

While the dungeons that we are crossing in Boyfriend Dungeon are fully three-dimensional, conversations with the characters are carried out in a two-dimensional environment. The latter is particularly noteworthy because of their refined character designs, maintained in a characteristic cartoonish style.
