Book of Travels

Book of Travels is an independent online RPG that offers a slightly different approach to the genre - it does not bet on a large number of players and does not give users numerous common activities to choose from. Instead, the production gives everyone the opportunity to create an individual, unique adventure, which is further enhanced by rare interactions with other people. Might and Delight studio (known from the creation of Meadow, Tiny Echo, Pan-Pan) is responsible for the development and release of this title.

Plot

Book of Travels takes place in a mysterious loaction known as the Braided Shore Peninsula. The game world is inspired by European fairy tales and contains numerous fantasy elements (e.g. magic). We can find here areas permeated by various myths, but also more industrialized zones, reminiscent of cities.

Mechanics

The Book of Travels game starts with the creation of a character. The player chooses from dozens of available models and adjusts the personality and character of his hero (they are described on a special card, just like the statistics in other MMORPGs). It is possible to become a hero representing various archetypes - e.g. an adventurer or a wandering magician.

Then we start our journey, during which the action is most often observed from the side. During the journey we are dealing with random events that often turn out to be connected with each other and shape the unique adventure of our character. We can also fight and meet heroes of other players - and there is a possibility to compete with them and cooperate with them.

A characteristic feature of Book of Travels is a limited form of communication with other users. We can only express ourselves through special symbols, and our character learns the signs as the game progresses - for example, only after visiting the city we can start talking about it.

By playing, you can also develop your character and acquire new abilities, selected from a list of several hundred possible options. What is important, we gain experience not only by fighting, but also by exploring, talking, collecting things and trading. In combat, we learn more when we fail than when we win.

Game modes

In Book of Travels we can only play with others, but the game has a quite unique approach to multiplayer mode - it does not emphasize the frequent interactions between players.

Technical aspects

Book of Travels has a very nice graphic design that combines two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements. Both the silhouettes of the characters and the boards representing the individual locations have been designed and made with great attention to detail, using hand-drawn illustrations reworked to give them depth. The characteristic palette of colours brings to mind images and reflects well the atmosphere of the discussed production.
