Bonaparte: A Mechanized Revolution is a turn-based strategy and the debut project of independent Canadian Studio Imugi. The company was founded by Jongwoo Kim (co-founder of Kitfox Games – publisher of the best-selling Dwarf Fortress), Martin Brouard (co-founder of Sabotage – studio responsible for The Messenger and Sea of Stars) and Quinn Kybartas.
Plot
Bonaparte: A Mechanized Revolution offers us an alternative, steampunk vision of the French Revolution, in which the war is fought not only by humans, but also by powerful steam-poowered mechs known as Colossi. In addition, Napoleon Bonaparte is replaced by other representatives of the titular family - Celine and Cesar. During the game we embody one of these characters, and the fate of both them and the future of the revolution, and consequently - the whole of France, depends on our decisions.
Gameplay
In Bonaparte: A Mechanized Revolution we choose from a character representing the Bonaparte lineage, which we want to embody. The gameplay has two main elements, the first of which is the strategic layer, in which we look at the map of France and make decisions that shape the fate of a country engulfed in revolutionary turmoil. It's up to us whether we support the rebels, side with the king, or try something different by reforming the monarchy.
The key to success is skillful maneuvering in the political maze and winning over important personalities, among which there is no shortage of historical figures. This is not the end, as we still need to take care of military aspects, recruiting soldiers, building mechanical colossi, and ensuring that our army is as technologically advanced as possible. The second layer of gameplay involves turn-based battles on maps covered with a grid of hexagonal squares. During this process, we need to properly position our units and skillfully exploit their strengths and the enemy's weaknesses.
