Action game, including platformer and shoot'em upa features. The task ahead is to cure cosmic whales of dangerous diseases and mutations, and thus to restore the old order in which people and animals providing interstellar transport will live in harmony with each other. The game is presented in a side perspective, and is based on the exploration of different stages and elimination of hostile enemies.
Blubber Busters is an action game with elements characteristic for platformers and shoot'em ups. The title was released on PC and developed by the independent studio Thar Be Monsters - the inspiration for developers were iconic titles from the nineties of the XX century, headed by the Mega Man, Metal Slug and Metroid series.
Story
The action of Blubber Busters takes place in the distant future. People have been living in harmony with cosmic whales for years, taking care of their health and safety. Powerful beings return the favor by offering their services of transport to the farthest corners of the galaxy and helping to obtain exotic resources. However, this unique symbiosis is disturbed by mysterious diseases that may decimate their population - among them a puzzling mutation that makes these once peaceful animals aggressive. The four main characters have no choice but to roll up their sleeves and try to annihilate the sources of subsequent infections.
Mechanics
The action of Blubber Busters is presented in side perspective. The game consists of exploring successive stages, located in the stomachs of individual whales, and eliminating the sources of increasingly dangerous disease. Tackling them entails facing unique challenges and carrying out a variety of tasks. The funds thus obtained make it possible not only to improve the characters and research into new technologies but also expand and improve the clinic where sick animals are treated. The key to success is careful management of available resources - individual whales may show different symptoms, so it is up to us to optimize expenses and focus our exploration on treating specific symptoms.
The core of the game is combat. We face both smaller adversaries in the form of various monsters, as well as powerful bosses - defeating them requires the development of specific tactics and the possession of a strong enough arsenal. We have four heroes at our disposal, between whom we can switch at any time. These differ in terms of combat ability and available weaponry - for example, while Eva can climb the walls and Rudy makes excellent use of the flamethrower, Emmett uses defibrillators that revive dying whales, while Cell, armed with laser weapons, can do a great job of removing threats from a safe distance.
Technical aspects
Blubber Busters is powered by the popular Unity technology, thanks to which the two-dimensional visuals present a high level of workmanship. Both the detailed levels as well as the designs of individual opponents have been maintained in an eye-catching cartoonish style. The gameplay is accompanied by dynamic, electronic music.
