Black Future '88 is a 2D arcade shooter with platformer elements. The game was prepared by independent studio Super Scary Snakes, making it the team's official debut.
Story
The players find themselves in a post-apocalyptic world. One Duncan triggered nuclear annihilation, responsible for dropping the atomic bombs. The first one fell in the summer of 1988, and by December the sky was completely covered by clouds, from which nuclear rain is constantly falling. Those who managed to survive the explosions will still die as a result of the floods. The only chance is to defeat Duncan, hiding on the top floor of a large tower.
Mechanics
The players find themselves in a randomly generated building, whose mad owner waits at its top floor. Our task is to take him out. The game focuses mainly on combat, during which we use various weapons found during the game (a total of more than 50 unique weapons have been prepared) and unique skills of the heroes - we can control one of five different characters. In addition, we have more than 30 buffs and debuff to help us adapt our capabilities to current needs; however, they need to be carefully selected and combined, an "overdose" will cause our protagonist's heart to explode.
The tower has been divided into five different zones with different rules; in each zone, we have to face a very dangerous boss.
Game modes
Black Future '88 encourages us to keep repeating the game, but if we get bored with the single-player mode, we can try our hand at the co-op for two people. In addition, there are daily challenges where we can compete for the best results with players from all over the world.
Technical aspects
What distinguishes Black Future '88 from other independent shooters is the cyberpunk vibe. Super Scary Snakes managed to develop unique visuals and soundtrack by Tremor Low. Interestingly, the soundtrack was released in physical form on vinyl records.
